Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a school counselor, I get to work with the most amazing students from TK-6th grade! They are referred to me for a variety of reasons, some truly heartbreaking. Most of my students need help developing life skills. Many of them receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status and are being raised in single-parent homes. Many of my students do not see the potential that they have to be successful in life. Although I cannot change their home lives, I can be a positive influence during their school day.
My Project
We need to talk about equity, not equality. All students learn differently and have different needs. I aspire to create an equitable learning environment for students with sensory needs. Some students need fit balls to sit on to help concentrate. Students with autism or other sensory needs utilize noise-reducing headphones in the cafeteria, playground or assemblies. This will allow those students to take part in the activities without the fear of loud noises. Timed timers are an excellent way to keep students focused on a task. Timed timers increase work completion. The timers that visually show the time disappearing are the best. Fidget tools have been proven useful in keeping hands busy to concentrate. Students with disabilities also have sensory needs- sensory tools can help students with autism, ADHD and other disabilities. The problem is that these tools are expensive and many schools do not offer them or do not have enough. I would like to build the sensory tool library, and offer tools to any student needing them. As the school counselor, I can check out tools to students who can benefit from them. This will create a more equitable learning environment for any student with sensory needs.
