I teach pre-K students in a Massachusetts Public School system. These students come from all throughout our town, and require small group instruction to make progress. These students have all beendiagnosed with autism, and are members of a substantially separate classroom in a larger, inclusive community. Many of my students have sensory, physical, communication, adaptive, or behavioral challenges that make learning in a typical environment challenging. I hope to make my classroom as comfortable and engaging as possible for my students!
My Project
The students in my classroom have a large range of sensory needs--some are extra sensitive to light, sound, touch, smell and taste, while others have trouble registering these senses at home and in school. The items I have chosen will help my students self-regulate and attend more fully in my classroom. The step-by-step communicator will help non-verbal students to actively participate in group lessons. The sensory vest, weighted lap pad and shoulder snake help students obtain "deep pressure", which regulates their vestibular systems. The elephant massager will help to stimulate students' mouths for oral motor activities. The cuddleloop and body sox provide students with sensory input when they are getting dysregulated. I have seen these tools work wonders for students, and hope to continue on in the tradition with our occupational therapist.
