I have the privilege of teaching students with Intellectual Disabilities in a self-contained mild/moderate setting.
My students are amazing, kind, curious individuals with a variety of talents and gifts. Unlike their typical peers, the demands of a school day can be overwhelming.
To provide better support for them, I would like to provide a calming space that would allow them to have the option to sit in a different type of seat, rather than a school chair. In addition, I would like for them to have a few sensory toys to provide them with enjoyment in this space.
Thank you for your consideration and your generosity.

My Project
Typical kids are better able to calm their bodies when they feel overwhelmed, upset or if they need to unwind. My students with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism can struggle with regulating their bodies. For this reason, I would like to create a small, inviting area in my room for kids to take a sensory break. In this space would be a few sensory toys/tools to provide them with interest and enjoyment. In addition, there would be two alternative seating options to provide them with a seat that is different and more comfortable than a typical school chair. Thank you for your consideration.
