Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 23 second graders are ready for an academic adventure to discover new topics! However, because all my students are both English Language Learners (ELL) and Title 1, they are posed with some challenges that they try and conquer on a day-to-day basis. As a result of the challenges my students face on a daily occurrence, I try to expose them to rich and meaningful content and a safe learning environment.
Being English Language Learners and in a Title 1 school, my students are posed with a greater challenge than just the average student.
Low income families make us a Title 1 school and could mean that they are not receiving the additional resources at home in order to be successful at school. ELL is a struggle in itself because these students are in a predominantly English speaking school. They may not have access to sufficient English at home in order for them to be supportive at school. Often these students are behind in this aspect of knowing and learning English.
The strength that my students show, is that despite the challenges they face, they simply do not give up. Their determination and perseverance makes me proud as their teacher.
My Project
The materials chosen have been carefully thought out to help my students with frustration issues, sensory overload and for those who have a hard time keeping their bodies calm. Some of the tools are sequenced weighted animals, flexible seating choices and social emotional learning books. These weighted animals provide a calming effect and promote relaxation. The flexible seating will help my students channel their hyper activeness in a non-disruptive and safe manner. The books are to provide a sense of understanding of their feeling and emotions and how to manage them. The books also bring awareness to those who are going through these emotions and how to respond in these situations.
Allowing my students to have different resources and materials to enhance their learning when frustrations arise is my goal, so learning can still take place.
As second graders, students have the pressure of everyday learning and at times home insecurities. With that, their frustrations seem to get the best of them. When this happens having these resources readily available can prevent a crisis in the classroom providing safety for the students while making learning the priority again. I hope with these tools we can prevent this from happening. I know that with these new materials all my students can achieve learning and success in our classroom.
