Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach ESL, PE, and health to elementary and middle school students in southeast Portland. The school in which I teach is rapidly transforming. About half the student body comes from low-income households.
For many of my students, school is a safe place where they have the opportunity to nourish their bodies and minds.
It is my hope that by honoring the personhood of all of my students and supporting their well-being, my students will have an equitable and solid foundation that will allow them to be active and informed advocates for themselves as well as for others.
My Project
Quiet sensory tools contribute to greater levels of focus and meaningful participation as students are able to achieve sensory input in a manner that does not distract their peers. Sensory tools can help improve concentration by allowing the brain to sift out extrasensory information.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, but you will also ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
For students whose sensory needs are not supported by traditional classroom supplies, these tools will be vital in helping them to better prepare themselves to actively learn the meaningful content taught in Health and ESL classes.
