Sensory Tools for Engaged Learning

Help me give my students the opportunity to enjoy learning through sensory play

My Students

My students are a resilient group of six children in a special education classroom, grades first through fifth. Most students have disabilities that limit their cognitive as well as adaptive functioning, affecting their ability to learn and retain new information.

I am absolutely amazed, every day, by their perseverance through tasks that challenge them, such as maintaining attention to activities, regulating their behaviors, and learning concrete skills, such as letters and numbers.

Sensory equipment, picture books, social and emotional regulation tools, and basic school supplies are instrumental in empowering these students to reach their goals. It is so exciting to see these students soar when given the means and motivation.

Our classroom is continually in need of these tools for learning. Any help in making these supplies available to the students goes a long way!

My Project

Learning to self-regulate through sensory play is especially important for my students as they can struggle with needing more or less input from their environment and having increased/decreased activity levels as well as decreased attention spans. Through sensory activities, my students become more focused, calm and ready to learn. It allows them to learn new academic skills while also learning skills for self-awareness and independence in regulating their bodies.

My students are wonderfully motivated and engaged when they are able to practice academic skills using sensory tools and materials and are more likely to retain what they learn.

These materials will be used by students who are in need of sensory breaks (e.g. needing a “squeeze” or “hug” from the inflatable Harkla Hug chair) and sensory learning (e.g. molding letters from kinetic sand and matching sight words found in a sensory bin full of water beads) incorporated into their day. Please help me stock our classroom with materials that will motivate and engage these learners!
