Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a public school site in San Diego Unified School District in California. I am an Special Education Teacher who works with children who have mild/moderate disabilities (autism, ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia) in Kindergarten, first, and second grade. My students spend the majority of their school day in general education classrooms, but come to the my classroom for specialized instruction in reading, math, and social/emotional support.
My students are brave, smart, and AMAZING kids.
They bring their best selves to school everyday, and always try their best! I dream of having a learning space that can meet the diverse sensory needs of my special learners.
My Project
The special needs of my students sometimes make it difficult for them to learn in the classroom environment. With your help, I will work with teachers and students to help them find tools to meet their sensory needs right in the classroom. In practice, this looks like a special cushion for a child with ADHD that allows for wiggle while participating in the classroom. Or giving a student a stress ball or fidget to use while participating in whole group learning. Or incorporating yoga poses into classroom routines so that all children have the opportunity to move. These tools will help our school be more neurodiverse, trauma-informed, and restorative.
