We are a self-contained preschool special education class for children with severe communication delays and behavioral needs.
The classroom has four adults (1 teacher and 3 assistants) for 14 students.
Our entertaining kiddos are ages 3-5. The students work best when provided with tailored learning opportunities that offer multiple means of engagement to target individual goals. For example, this could mean a child says "hi" by pushing a button on a voice output device, or uses adaptive scissors as they begin to learn to cut. The students work tirelessly every day to learn skills that most people take for granted (such as sitting, throwing trash away, hand washing, and so on).
My Project
My classroom is full of students who love to seek out ways for sensory input. As a special education teacher I am constantly looking for ways to incorporate new and entertaining sensory activities.
The 4-way sensory table and materials will allow students to access concepts in a new way.
They will enjoy tactile activities with materials such as sand, water, beads, and much more! These items will definitely make their learning more hands-on!
By exploring items with their hands they are also fine-tuning their small muscles to strengthen their motor capabilities when it comes to things such as feeding themselves, manipulating fasteners, and handwriting. These items will incorporate educational concepts such as letters, numbers, colors, and shapes. But we will also be able to bring in science concepts such as float/sink, habitats, measuring, and so much more.
