My students are scholars, learners, writers, readers, and mathematicians. They speak English, Arabic, Spanish, Lao, Tibetan, Vietnamese and Tagalog and each bring their unique backgrounds to our classroom. My students absolutely love hands-on activities and learn best through manipulatives and other kinesthetic activities.
My students are shooting for the stars this year as they explore their inherent capabilities as learners, friends, and members of a classroom community that values kindness, diversity, and respect.
Stege Elementary is a Title I school, which means that more than half of the families it serves come from low-income households. Twenty-five percent of students are English Language Learners, ninety-three percent are from low-income households, and one-hundred percent receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
Young children learn best through hands-on experiences. A sensory table would allow my students to explore their creativity and become more comfortable with making mistakes. We often discuss the value of mistakes and it is important to me that my students understand that there is no "correct" answer.
All of my students thrive in a play-based environment where student-led exploration is encouraged.
Our sensory table would be used to delve deeper into our unit themes as well as to explore phonics, writing, math, and STEM. We currently have five centers that my students love, but need to expand so that all students' sensory needs are met. The sand tools and kinetic sand will provide opportunities for my students to discover independently. I plan on using the sensory table as an integral part of my thematic unit. For example, including dirt and plants during our "Living Things" unit etc. The broom and dust pan will be used to keep our discovery area clean and tidy.
