This year is my second year of teaching preschool special education in an inner city school, within a high-poverty neighborhood. Roughly twenty percent of the school's population is living in temporary living situations, which can affect students' daily academics. Each one of my students has a significant intellectual disability, autism or other need that require them to overcome daily obstacles. More than half of my students also speak a language other than English in their homes.
I have a classroom of 15 lovely students who are three, four or five years old and are excited and eager to learn about themselves and the world they live in through multi-sensory approaches and hands-on learning!
Each one of my students work so hard every day to be the best learners they can be. They are energetic, joyful and brave to work to overcome everyday academic and functional challenges.
My Project
Sensory integration is part of our daily routine in my preschool classroom. Some students require different sensory supports such as weighted items, vibrating items, fidgets or chewys in order to learn how to regulate their bodies. When the students' bodies are regulated, they can reach their full potential in the classroom and focus on functional and academic tasks!
We need a variety of sensory support such as a vibrating pillow and a wiggle chair cushion to ensure my students have the proper sensory integration they need to succeed and reach their goals.
I am requesting a variety of fidgets such as the glitter wand, Pull 'N Pop tubes, and the stress relief balls to act as fidgets or "working for" items for my students to utilize during group activities to increase focus and engagement. I am also requesting the earmuffs and vibrating pillows to provide certain students with the necessary sensory tools to utilize in order to help them regulate their sensory needs. The other items such as the visual timer will help with our overall daily routine and tasks. Thank you for being a part of our classroom!
