Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a special education teacher in a Title I school, I work with students with special needs ranging from learning disabilities to autism. But that’s not what makes them special. They are caring, funny, and determined. It is amazing to see them support each other when one is having a difficult moment. They make me laugh constantly, like when they stand up and bow after accomplishing a task or goal. I mean, who knew that one being could have that much joy? And, how amazingly determined! They are some of the hardest working people you will ever encounter. And I don’t just mean children. These students ask for more books so they can become a better reader. I’ve even had some ask for homework so they can practice more. These kids want to succeed as much as any kid, and sometimes more. They truly amaze me every single day!
My Project
These sensory support tools will provide students with autism a way to calm their bodies and minds when they are feeling anxious. And, in return, their learning of content will increase as they will be able to focus on instruction and activities in the classroom.
Students will learn to self-regulate the use of these tools to become more independent and advocate for their needs.
The weighted lap pads and the weighted backpack have been proven to provide a sense of relaxation for many students. The visual timers are helpful in minimizing an anxious mind concerning time. I hope my students get to use these tools in the near future. I know they will benefit greatly!
