This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach special education students in kindergarten-3rd grade. My school is located in the heart of the inner city and has 87% minority enrollment. The students are almost entirely recipients of free and reduced-price lunch. Many of my students struggle with homelessness, food insecurity, and have parents with addictions.
My students work very hard, even though many of them have very little.
I want to give them the best opportunities for success and advocate for them in any way I can.
My Project
I think it is very important to support the sensory needs of my students. I have made it a priority in my classroom, and I have seen first-hand the benefits of it. This project is for much-needed sensory items like pop-it's, stress balls, and a "hug" canoe for children with Autism or sensory processing disorder.
Sensory support means so much to my students, so it means a lot to me.
