Physical activity, coordination, balance, self-regulation and mobility are important aspects needed in a classroom/school setting. Some of our students movement may be impaired by numbness, muscle spasms or pain. As a result, students may have difficulty manipulating equipment, or they may use a wheelchair to increase their mobility. Some students may become easily fatigued throughout their day.
Our students require extra support to help them increase their independence during their school day.
Difficulty with fine motor strength is a common issue in the students that I work with. All of the students have some type of disability that results in them having problems with attending to task, reaching and grasping for toys or items, handwriting, coloring, cutting and self-help skills, such as, button, snap and zipping and feeding skills.
My Project
The students will be able to use these items to help strengthen their skills in fine motor, upper body strength, head control, grasping, releasing, reaching, attention to task and focusing which will help them be more active in the classroom. The new materials will be incorporated into group sessions within the classroom. These items will help us improve the student's strength, endurance and coordination skills.
We have started a new classroom program where students have more physical disabilities and present with difficulty to reach, grasp and release toys or classroom items.
These therapy materials can make a huge difference in the students daily classroom environment who have difficulty with their strength, coordination, and endurance by giving them more tactile and visual input. It is important for the students to be able to participate in activities that will increase their daily participate to build strength, focus, and attention.
The plastic egg shakers will help the students hold a grasp and increase the student's attention to the task. The sequin pillow will help the students with reaching and maintaining attention to a task. The lava lamp, ocean wave projector and fiber optic lamp will all help the students with attention to task and reach and grasping skills. All the materials needed will be used while the students are placed in different positioning to work on fine motor and upper body strength, as well as, coordination and endurance when completing activities while they are maintaining their focus.
