Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of teaching middle school students with severe and profound disabilities. In addition, our school is located in a very impoverished community.
My students have a difficult time managing the stress and anxiety that comes with being at school all day.
Because they cannot communicate these feelings, they often exhibit behaviors that could be prevented with access to appropriate sensory materials. Many of these students are in wheel chairs. With this sensory room, they would be able to get out of their chairs during the day and enjoy time to stretch out in a relaxing and safe environment. Other students could use this area to prevent behaviors from occurring where they may injure themselves or others. This will teach them strategies to calm themselves, so injuries do not occur.
My Project
Imagine hearing a loud pitched noise all day everyday. Now imagine always feeling like you’re crawling out of your skin. Now imagine being in a very loud, crowded place with no doors and no way out. This is how my students feel each and every day. Providing an area within the classroom that can relieve them of these feelings will not only make school a more enjoyable experience, it will allow them to be more successful academically.
When these students are more successful in the classroom they are learning more independent functioning skills to assist them with being successful adults.
The materials I have requested will also help students learn strategies that they can use at home and/or in the community to help calm themselves when they are feeling overloaded by sensory input. You donation can help these students now and in the future.
