I am a special education teacher, co-teaching in an inclusive first-grade classroom in Chicago, IL. My school has a beautifully diverse community of learners. Forty-seven languages are spoken by families in our school community and there is a wide variety of religious and socio-economic backgrounds.
Each and every student in this inclusive classroom setting is wonderfully unique, creating a diverse group of learners with varying interests, levels of ability, areas of strengths and growth, cultural backgrounds, sensory needs, and learning styles.
My Project
The sensory materials you so generously donate will make a difference in my students' learning by providing the sensory integration opportunities students need to regulate their bodies at school!
All of the materials requested will help students regulate their bodies to increase engagement and learning at school!
The alphabet nameplates will give students a visual model of their name, the letters of the alphabet, and number line. The bouncy bands will provide movement opportunities for students at their desks. The tactile fidgets, chew toys, and bubbles will be used in the classroom break space for students to choose to use for sensory input to calm down. The study carrels and noise-cancelling headphones will assist some students to focus on the task at hand. The weighted hoodie vest will provide proprioceptive input for students who need assistance feeling their body in space.
All the materials donated today will help my students this school year and for many years to come!
