Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Where do I even begin to describe this amazing group of kids? I work with special needs students, Pre-K through 5th grade. Most of my students are moderately to severely impacted and have a wide range of diagnoses (Ex. Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental Delays, etc.). Most of these students come from hard-working, low-income families who deserve all the support that they can get. My students make me laugh, smile, and want to learn as much as they aspire to each and every day. These students truly inspire me with the amount of heart and determination that pours out on campus.
As a school-based occupational therapist, it is my job to empower students with the ability to access their curriculum and provide individualized supports needed to successfully learn.
With this in mind, each of my students have VERY unique needs. It has become a challenge to determine which tools and/or adaptions are most appropriate for each child when resources are limited. These kids deserve to provided with a therapy environment that enriches their mind, body, and spirit with everything they need to be successful students. With your support, I hope to help make it happen!
My Project
My students need a fun and sensory enriched space to learn in.
Each of my students has unique sensory needs.
Thus, I want to ensure that sessions are enriched with sensory experiences for optimal learning.
These students would benefit from adapted seating options in order to improve their attention to tabletop tasks and posture. At this time, we only have standard chairs, some of which are too big for the little ones! I have children who seek vestibular and proprioceptive input- which makes alternative seating like the wobble seats absolutely essential. Having 1 of each size allows for me to trial various seating options with each student to find the right fit for them in the classroom. Although each child is unique, they all learn from hands-on experiences and could use some fun while they're at it! The ball pit and scooter boards will allow to me to work on various fine motor and gross motor skills in fun and creative ways.
Overall, all of these materials would be a wonderful start to creating a fun and educational environment for each of my students. Thank you for your consideration!
