My role as a kindergarten and first grade special education teacher requires me to incorporate sensory and emotional regulation tools and strategies into the typical standards of these grades. My students have a variety of backgrounds, that make their learning profiles unique. However, each of my students has difficulty regulating his/her emotions and/or behaviors. Having the sensory and coping materials available to these students will allow them to de-escalate and return to their academics quicker and more efficiently. By the end of the year, I want my students to possess the necessary independent skills to access grade level curriculum.
My Project
Some students can't access general education curriculum without sensory and motor breaks throughout their day.
The gross motor items requested, such as the trampoline and plasma cars will allow my students to get their energy level either up or down to participate in daily class activities.
Most of my students have difficulty to self-regulate, so providing them with tools to assist with that is crucial.
The fine motor items requested, such as beading, lacing and tweezers provided options for my students to work independently and calm down when feeling upset. These basic sensory tasks allow my students to redirect their attention from whatever is bothering them to a specific, hands-on activity.
All of these items requested are picked out for their unique ability to assist students with social-emotional and behavioral challenges. My special education students come from all walks of life and present with different cognitive, emotional and behavioral challenges. Having a wide variety of items to assist them in their times of crisis is crucial to academic and future success.
