Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My passion for science is evident from the clothes and dresses I wear to school to the constant daily world connections and stories I bring to each lesson. I indulge every question, and get my students thinking about the world through a scientific lens in order to solve real world problems using logic, developing theories, collecting evidence and drawing conclusions. We focus on hands-on learning, collaborating and bringing joy to learning in general.

Many of my 120+ students have never had a “real” science class or felt excited about science until they enter my space where every single student despite their backgrounds, learning challenges and gaps can feel successful.

I teach at a title I school and do everything I can to eliminate barriers and provide opportunities so that my students can always feel comfortable, safe and excited to learn in my space.

My Project

Following the pandemic and 18+ months of quarantine, our students have faced challenges with self-regulation and focus within the classroom. As our students are adjusting to consistency and scheduling, they are struggling to self regulate. We have noticed an increase in anxiety and ADHD symptoms as well as PTSD with the ongoing pandemic.

The sensory items are being requested to help them to meet their needs for sensory stimulation, while allowing them to focus within the educational setting.

Many of the students are eager to learn and they are aware that their constant need for sensory stimulation is getting in the way of their ability to be fully engaged. As an educator, my goal is to provide as much support as possible to help them reach their full potential.
