My Project

I work with a group of early childhood special education students that would thrive if there was an inviting and calm environment where they could get their sensory needs met. I work one-on-one between two ECSE classrooms where sensory modulation, tolerance, and regulation are huge barriers to ability to engage in imposed therapeutic activities. Their difficulty with regulation also makes engagement in their classroom environments very challenging. Between the two classrooms, I work with several staff members who are just as eager and motivated to provide these students with a welcoming space that will help bring out their true abilities.

We envision this space to be a calming environment that can provide various types of sensory supports, such as visual, oral, auditory, vestibular, and proprioceptive input, to encourage a calm alertness level that is ready to learn and grow.

Many of my students are very dysregulated in the classroom environment and benefit from a designated area for one-on-one work. I have many students that I work solely on sensory modulation and regulation with to support their best performance in the classroom. Having a space that contains flexible seating, sensory exploration opportunities, and calming tools such as visual tubes, weighted items, and items that provide increased proprioceptive input via deep squeezes will encourage regulation and a calm alertness level that is ready to learn!

We have been given a space located between the two classrooms, and we now have a blank slate to create our vision and dream for these students. We put in so much of our own effort, time, and money, but with minimal budget allotted to therapy tools, we can only accomplish so much on our own.

We are truly grateful and thankful for any support you have to offer, and we know our students will be too.
