My students are not your typical students. They have trouble sitting still in class. They blurt out before being called on. They speak with an iPads. They are always moving.
And that's okay.
They weren't born to be still. They were born to be unique.
The majority of the students I work with have autism, huge hearts, and brilliant minds. Some can do math, read, and write. Some are working on life skills and communication. The common link between all of my students is the need for a quiet space where they can calm their senses and regulate their bodies.
My Project
My students struggle with social/emotional needs and control. Every day we work hard on strategies to help us calm and return to class to be effective learners.
I am trying to create a space in my school where my students can come and work on regulation.
Often my students need breaks for social/emotional regulation and this room could help.
We work hard with our students to teach them strategies to self-regulate. One thing we are lacking is the proper tools to do that. My students need sensory fidgets, pressure spaces, and body socks. They deserve the tools to help them implement their self-regulating strategies.
