Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are high schoolers with varying disabilities who are working at a wide range of levels, from 2nd to 5th-grade level. They live in an urban environment and have limited resources from our system.
The majority of my students struggle with managing their emotions.
They have struggled with years of difficulties in school, paired with trauma and stress in their personal lives. My goal is to teach my students academics while at the same time, help them manage their emotions.
My Project
The use of weighted objects in the classroom has sound scientific backing. Some benefits include improving focus, helping increase the production of serotonin in the body, and reducing tension. Along with other sensory materials in my room, these weighted bulldogs will help me alleviate the stress my students feel and help them address the stress proactively.
Although people might believe that adolescents might not need sensory objects to be successful in school, nothing could be further from the truth.
At this age, students are grappling with a variety of issues and it is a perfect opportunity to help them utilize age-appropriate tools to help them lessen anxiety and stress. For this reason, I am requesting stuffed bulldogs (our school's mascot) rather than weighted vests or blankets. I have seen the effect (and love) that these bulldogs have had in other classrooms, especially during times of high stress.
