I am a special education teacher/intervention specialist working with students from kindergarten through 3rd grade. I have a full spectrum of needs on my caseload, ranging from academic needs through autism, sensory processing disorder, and emotional disturbance.
My school is a Title 1 school, meaning that many of my students have experienced poverty and other forms of trauma, in addition to their disabilities.
To be successful in the classroom, their emotional, sensory, academic, and behavior needs are all a priority.
My Project
My students often come to me with a history of trauma, in addition to their learning or developmental disabilities. They are often searching for not only a place to help them with the academics, but a place where they can feel safe, comfortable, and have their sensory needs met.
When students feel safe and their physical and emotional needs are met, they are able to free space in their brains to work.
Addressing the social, emotional, and sensory needs of children with disabilities and those who experienced trauma can allow them to break down barriers, put aside their worries, and have fun learning and growing.
