My Students

My students are all from rural West Virginia. They are part of a new program for students with autism and are working towards a high school diploma.

Prior to this year, our students would receive a modified diploma due to their exceptionality and prior classroom placement.

We are now working towards integrating these students into general education classes with support so that they may be more successful adults.

If this program continues to show success, it will become a standard for schools not only in our district but our state as well.

My Project

A sensory classroom is designed to give students with autism a quiet environment that appeals to their needs through visual stimuli, auditory calm and tactile function.

In my room, newly designated as such, I want to create an oasis for the students.

This oasis will be a place of calm, get-away from the hustle and bustle of a busy high/middle school. A place for my students to decompress and refocus their energies.

I would like to add four new bean bag chairs as alternative seating for my students to use when they need that calm. My students, due to their disability, need strong, durable equipment that will last throughout their daily moods.
