Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are all from three to five years old. Our classroom is typically their first school experience. The students in our classroom qualify under the education eligibility criteria for autism, with mild to moderate impairments in areas of social skills, language development, and sensory regulation and integration. Our students come from all cultural backgrounds and beliefs. We strive to make our classroom the best learning environment and experience we can for their first school experience.

Our class consists of eight amazing boys and two wonderful girls who all have an IEP (Individual Education Plan) qualifying under the educational eligibility of autism.

Each student has amazing skills and talents. Each student's IEP is created to build from their strengths and support their unique needs. The majority of our students' goals are created to support delays in the areas of social skills, play skills, academics, fine/gross motor, and coping skills.

My Project

My students need new sensory items to bring into our classroom. Having fidgets available at each center in our classroom will create a safe sensory escape. Offering lap weights, textures, gel pads, tangles, etc. for the students to test, enjoy, and experience for themselves. It is our wish that the students will explore all these items themselves and eventually be able to appropriately request these items independently as a replacement behavior. This will be helpful when they feel like they are on "sensory overload". We have requested different materials for different needs. We have also requested sensory writing utensils to help our students with motor skills as well.

Provided with explicit teaching and social modeling, our students will learn how maneuver through life’s challenges and obstacles to ensure that their sensory needs are being met.

The earlier we teach our students to advocate for themselves, the more prepared they’ll be for lifelong success -- inside and outside of school. Our goal is to help them learn to self-regulate and meet their sensory needs before they get overstimulated and feel like they need to escape.
