My school is considered to be high poverty with many at-risk students. Sixty percent of my class is on free or reduced lunches. I have one student with special learning needs. And, a large number of students receive Title One services for reading intervention.
My kindergarten students come to school each morning with a huge smile and are excited to start their day.
I love seeing my students at school each day.
In my classroom, I like to foster a family atmosphere where students can feel safe to voice their opinions and be themselves. Collaboration is a huge part of our classroom and helps them discover new things about themselves through learning.
My Project
My students need a sensory friendly classroom. At this age, children have a difficult time sitting and focusing for a long period of time. They need items that will provide them with sensory choices in the classroom to help them get through a full day of school. Some children at the age of five do not have the large motor ability to sit on the carpet like their peers. The rocking chair, floor seat, and trampoline will provide them with unique seating options to fit their sensory needs. The light shades will block the fluorescent lighting and leave a dim, calm light in the classroom. This will allow for our classroom to feel like the lights are turned down, but not off.
On top of the sensory needs, some of my students have been diagnosed with ADHD or ADD.
The weighted dog will provide enough pressure on a student's lap to allow them to focus. The massage ball will provide light pressure to relax and calm students. The "twiddle sport" is a fidget muff that students can place both hands inside to occupy their hands while sitting at the carpet. The rocking chair and trampoline will also provide movement breaks in addition to the seating options during large group time. I am excited to have a sensory friendly classroom for my kindergartners!
