My classroom is filled with a diverse group of children from various backgrounds. More than half of the students that go to my school are from low-income families. Each student has different academic and functional needs they struggle with. It is challenging for them to interact in the general education classroom independently.
I want my students to be successful academically and functionally.
I go in to the classroom to work with them and they come down and work in my classroom. The amount of effort they put into their work is something I admire.
Our school serves grades K-5. My caseload continues to increase, but the materials I have to assist them remain the same. My goal is to have my students more integrated with their regular education peers, so they are not removed from opportunities to interact and learn with them.
My Project
I have many students that have specific sensory needs. Some of them require sensory breaks to decrease the amount of anxiety they are having. Some students require items that are tactile. They need to feel items. Sensory beads, noodles, and balls would give my students the opportunity explore their sense of touch. The would be able to do this in the sensory trays I'm asking for or on the light table. Some students have a sensitivity to lights and it can be too bright. The light table table would provide a calmer lighting, which can soothe them and make them more relaxed. I've also asked for Jelly LED Light up Toys. The light up toys can be beneficial to my students when they need to use.
I work with some students that have high anxiety who struggle to keep their behavior regulated.
At times, their anxiety can be decreased by a strong hug, but that does not work. There are moments when they just don't want to be touched. A weighted blanket would give students the opportunity to not be touched and also have their anxiety decreased at the same time. I also have students that need to have stress balls to help release anxiety. I'm asking for a set of 3 stress balls to assist with decreasing anxiety in my students.
The sensory materials I have requested would assist my students with regulating themselves and assist them with returning to the general education environment.
