My students need sensory processing items, including sensory balls, vibrating snakes/pillows, weighted bracelets, glitter tubes, spiky gloves and bubbles.
"Every student can learn, just not on the same day or the same way." ~George Evans.
My students are ready to learn but some have sensory processing needs. I want my students to be successful academically and I believe they can be once their sensory needs are met.
I have several great students in grades kindergarten through second grade.
My students come eager to learn each day. They are hungry for knowledge and to have their sensory needs met. Students can have sensory processing needs ranging from auditory to visual to tactile to olfactory. These needs can be met by adding weight, using different textures or adding visual components to a classroom. Once these needs are met, students can spend more time focusing on instruction and learning and less on what their bodies need to function at their individual normal rates.
My Project
The sensory processing items I selected can help my students by adding sensory breaks to our daily routines. Research has shown that providing students with sensory breaks can allow students to focus more intently during a shorter period of time while allowing them to feel comfortable in their own bodies. I already include sensory breaks in my classroom, but the requested items of sensory balls, vibrating snakes/pillows, weighted shoulder snakes, glitter tubes, spiky gloves and bubbles will provide more options for my students to choose and become more capable of self-regulation and aware of their needs.
Once students are capable of communicating what they need, they will be more successful in society as adults through communication and knowledge of how to meet what their bodies are telling them they need. These items will be a beginning step to allowing students to be more independent throughout life.
Donations to this project will allow my students to grow academically and tap into abilities that may be overcast by their focusing on sensory needs and not academics.
By adding the balls, vibrating pillows, etc., students will have a better opportunity to have sensory processing needs met in a classroom setting and allow them to find various avenues to meet needs outside of the classroom as they will add ideas of what is available to reach a state of comfort that we all strive to achieve.
