Please help my students with their sensory needs! Children rely heavily upon sensory input to develop their thinking and learning skills. When multiple senses can be utilized in a lesson, students become more engaged. Sensory experiences enhance tactile, auditory, and visual processing. In addition, sensory materials provide opportunities to develop fine and gross motor skills. Finally, sensory encounters are proven to calm children with disabilities such as ADHD, Autism, and anxiety. I would like to assist in creating an environment that nurtures this vital sensory development.
My Project
These cushions will aid my students with their sensory needs. Students with disabilities, especially Autism and ADHD, often crave sensory stimulation. They frequently attempt to attain it in inappropriate ways inadvertently. This could mean touching a classmate or playing with learning materials in an incorrect manner. Many times these students do not understand this unconscious needs and certainly can’t verbalize it. These cushions are versatile in that students can touch them with their hands and feet, as well as sitting on them on the rug or at their seats. Besides the feeling it gives, they can move slightly which provides more sensory input.
