My students are ages 3-11 who have disabilities including developmental delays, autism, and speech-language disorders. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist so each student I work with has difficulty in the area of communication. In addition to communication needs, many struggle with sensory deficits secondary to autism, visual impairments, etc.
Due to the significant delays many of my students have, they are at a high risk of not meeting developmental and academic targets needed for school success.
My students require repetition and varied presentations in order to master new skills within a small group presentation then the generalization of these skills to the school-wide environment.
My job is to help each of my students develop the foundational skills needed to develop articulation and language skills needed to access their community, classroom, and education.
My Project
My students need sensory materials to engage them and maintain attention to learning opportunities. These amazing inflatable cushions will facilitate comfortable/secure seating to remove distractions and allow my students to access many foundational skills in the development of language and communication skills.
These cushions with colorful fillings (commonly referred to by students as 'sprinkles') will help my students feel stable in their seating and improve the ability to attend to tasks to develop many important skills including overall intelligibility, language development, pragmatics, etc.
My students have been identified with deficits that make learning difficult. By providing flexible seating, I will eliminate the distractions associated with poor motor control, uncomfortable seating, stability, and sensory input that impedes learning compared to non-affected peers.
I have students ages 3-11 with autism, developmental delays, visual/hearing impairments, language delays, etc that will enjoy these squellet cushions while being more engaged in learning opportunities.
