Help me give my students the sensory input that they might need during a lesson inorder for them to participate and attend appropriately and more effectively during that time and throughout the day.
My class consists of six smiling and courageous young boys. They learn in a 6:1:2 setting and are between the ages of 7 and 9. They are diagnosed with either having autism, or a speech/language delay. Despite their diagnosis they work very hard every day to overcome obstacles and meet their goals little by little.
I know I am the "teacher" but they teach me something new every single day and push me to be the best teacher I can possibly be!
No day is the same in my classroom and I hope that you can help me assist my children with the materials and items that they need in order to reach their full potential socially and academically.
My Project
Many of my students have difficulty sitting and attending during lessons and work sessions. This project will help provide my students with the sensory input that they need throughout the day. The items this project will fund are wobble chairs, bouncy bands for chairs, a circle time rug, a bean bag, boundary seating, a balance ball seat, a wobble cushion and chair, and a motion stool.
The wide variety of seating arrangements will not only give my students the sensory input that they are missing but, it will also provide them with the opportunity to make a choice.
The boundary seating will attach to chairs that are already in the classroom. Having that sense of boundary provides a child with the feeling of having their own space and gives them comfort in their own area of seating.
The bean bag chair will be put in an area that is designated for break time. This is where my students go during their reinforcement periods to read, play, or simply take a break. This item will help make that area more comfortable, rewarding, and intriguing.
The bouncy bands and wobble chairs will be for the students that have difficulty sitting still or in a seat for a long period of time. These items will provide those children with the movement that they need without getting out of their seat. It will give them the ability to attend to something for a longer period of time.
