Help me give my students seating such as a balance ball chair and portable rocker that will allow them to meet their sensory needs while engaging in learning activities.
I have the pleasure and privilege of working with a unique group of young adults with low incidence disabilities. These delightful young people work hard every day to gain greater independence and find their place in their community. They find joy in life that most people miss. They also face many struggles. These students have a very diverse range of disabilities including traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, genetic disorders, and autism. Most are nonspeaking and all are learning to use augmentative communication. They amaze me daily with their determination to meet life's challenges head on.
My Project
I have students who frequently engage in rocking and have communicated a desire to have a rocking chair in our classroom. Because we have a small space the portable rocking chair is a good fit. Other students prefer to bounce or are working on core muscle strength. Chairs such as the exercise ball chair aid greatly in meeting those needs.
Students with low incidence disabilities often have significant sensory and seating position needs.
These students benefit from access to a range of dynamic seating options in their environment. Being able to move between different types of seating helps them regulate their sensory systems, improve core muscle strength, and increase autonomy and choice during their time at school.
