My Students
I teach an Adaptive Elementary Life Skills (special education) class that serves students from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. My students have varying disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, & other disabilities. These kiddos have a wide variety of needs and skill levels. My students are unique and learn differently than most students do. They are capable of amazing things when provided with the right tools to support them and help them learn.
This is my first year teaching, and I am striving to create an environment that allows for my students to be happy & willing to learn!
My Project
Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. Sensory play for some children with special needs is comparable to easing into a nice, hot bath after a stressful day. It is immensely soothing to engage in sensory play for students who often struggle to cope with the world around them. Loud noises, bright lights, and simply being touched are just some of the stimuli that can send a child with sensory needs into a meltdown. Once a child reaches this point of escalation, they are not going to be in a space where they are ready to learn. Fortunately, providing a safe space for students can help them regain control of their emotions.
I envision my classroom being this safe space.
I would like my students to have access to a "blackout" tent when their senses become overwhelmed. In addition, I plan to incorporate sensory breaks into our daily schedule, giving my kiddos time to run their hands through water beads or relax with some water play. The use of fidget bands on chairs can help to keep my students with ADHD in their seats, focused, and engaged. All of the products that I have selected will help my students to be successful & enrich their learning experience.
