Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at Loma Heights come from many types of households. Many of our students have had many challenges they have had to overcome. Some students come to school with different types of trauma and our teachers and staff create a place here where they feel safe and want to come. Our students are resilient and are able to come to school everyday with a great attitude and learn. We are a Title 1 funded school which means we have a high concentration of low-income families. Although, we have a high poverty rate, it is still important to give high quality education.

My Project

We are creating a sensory room for kids who have sensory difficulties, diagnoses like ADHD, trauma, autism, etc. This room will be a safe space for students to come rest, refocus, regather themselves in order to return to their learning environment. Kids don't often have a positive space to refocus, which typically results in behaviors and disruptions. This room will be a preventative measure in helping the students to be successful on their learning journey.

We have a population of children that have been through numerous trauma triggers and have a difficult time learning in a general ed room.

This sensory room will help to alleviate their needs in a safe and quick fashion.
