The kiddos at our school come in with a variety of needs. From students in the top percentiles on standardized tests to students needing additional academic support, the students are a one-of-a-kind group. Our school was one of Chicago's first fully inclusive schools, making the staff and community dedicated to creating a comfortable, safe, and calming environment for all students.
The unique make-up of the students at our school makes this an amazing place to work and makes me passionate about providing them with every opportunity to thrive in school.
My Project
Years ago, our school had a dedicated room that was specially created for students with special needs. This room had adapted lighting, a dropped ceiling, and numerous spaces for students to relax. In addition, this space had a treadmill, flexible seating, therapy items, and a cool down corner. This room was perfect for students as a space for students to take a quick break during the day, as needed.
Sensory rooms provide opportunities for students who are overwhelmed by everyday stimuli to relax and decompress.
Sensory rooms can be used as a preventative measure to give students a space to get out energy and avoid negative behaviors in the classroom. Giving students this time away from their normal classroom can also improve focus and attention.
In my ideal sensory room, the requested items listed below would provide a comfortable and cozy environment for my students. The foam tiles will create a soft surface to sit on while students cool down. The teepee will be used as a calm down zone, where calming posters and strategies will be hung. The crash pad will be used by students as a way to get out energy.
