Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of our Special Education program and are all unique in their own way. The one thing they all have in common is the need for a safe place to take a break, cool down, spend some quiet time or just play/burn some energy. We have students who have sensory needs and/or physical limitations. We also have students who are extremely energetic, struggle in situations and/or settings that are too loud or too chaotic or require more frequent breaks than their peers.
My Special Needs students would benefit tremendously from an environment where they feel safe while allowing them to develop and engage their senses.
Our school serves students from 3rd to 5th grade with a wide variety of needs, disabilities, and diagnosis.
My Project
I have started putting together a sensory room for the Special Needs students in my building. Their wide range of needs requires a safe place to take a break and/or find sensory stimulation. I have graciously received a few larger items to help start the project but believe a few more essentials would really help my vision come to fruition. We are also in need of a storage shelf for some of our smaller sensory and fine motor items.
Until now, my students have only known a sensory room that has donated toys and a few donated items like exercise balls.
While these items have been much appreciated and well loved, I am thrilled that we will soon have a room full of items designed specifically for children with unique needs.
