This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

During the pandemic, our sensory room was used as storage space to support social distancing around our school. The little we did have in our sensory room became inaccessible for our students. During that time, we saw a shift in behaviors and had to explore new ways to provide sensory support. As special educators, we know how important it is to give students the opportunity to regulate their sensory system throughout the day. It not only helps students perform better, but it also helps decrease behaviors, regulate emotions, improve sensory processing. This space can also benefit students with physical and motor needs. Our goal is to reimagine the way our students receive sensory support by creating a new and improved sensory room.

We hope to create a therapeutic and functional space that our students deserve.

Any materials and equipment provided will support all sensory needs of our Pre-K through 5th Grade ASD students. We have teachers and parents ready to put in their time and effort into setting this up! Soothing lights will make our space vibrant and calming. A sequin wall and busy boards will increase stimulation. Floor tiles, balance beams, stepping stones and swings will help students exercise their gross motor skills and balance. We are grateful for our team and the space that we have. With your help we will create a functional sensory space our students can enjoy!
