My Students
I have been a speech pathologist for sixteen years. In that time, our population of children who are on the autistic spectrum has increased tremendously. The need to have a place to go to release stress and frustration is imperative to a child’s learning.
There are currently three, self-contained classrooms which currently service children who are diagnosed on the autistic spectrum.
These children need an outlet to release stress, calm, recenter and modulate their bodies so they may have sensory needs met to have an optimal learning experience. To be able to provide this in a public school, allows these students more of an opportunity to be with their peers and learn from them.
My Project
Manipulatives for a sensory room will make a difference in my students learning. These sensory materials will Help students to learn, grow, modulate their bodies and explore their environment. This is what a sensory room helps our learners do. Giving a safe place to help reset, calm and challenge young learners a valuable resource. I hope to keep adding to this room to help all learners have a place to help their mind and body. Materials such as textured items, shape sorters, and manipulatives for our new light table will engage and teach many of our students with sensory needs.
