My students bring a wide range of home culture experiences, into the classroom. Every individual fills our shared learning environment with energy and excitement.
Because my students come from a diverse variety of cultural, socioeconomic, and home language backgrounds, they learn about one other and the way each other lives, every day.
We continuously work to maintain a community where everyone feels safe, included, and happy. It is important that my students feel comfortable to express themselves, any way they identify. We need materials that support these interests and identities.
My Project
Overarching all of their core academics, my students work hard to develop their social-emotional growth. Students work to make respectful, responsible, and safe decisions all day long, so that we may teach and learn in an inclusive and caring environment. These are difficult skills to learn.
With the sensory learning tools that I am requesting in this project, my students will be better equipped to self-regulate in times of stress and difficulty.
Additionally, my students care about merited awards such as the Coretta Scott King, the Caldecott, and the Geisel Awards. My literary selections either received these awards, are of high interest for emergent readers, or help to shift the balance of our classroom library, to be more culturally representative.
