Sensory: Relax, Stimulate, Educate, Energize, or Calm.
Help me give my students a sensory/zen den. Specifically a sand/water bead table, sensory lights, and hand fidgets. I want them to have a place to let their imagination go wild, outside of the classroom!
We have some super hero kids that have amazing abilities, but we are lacking a Sensory/Zen Den for our little learners. We are a very rural school, and we have an amazing, small community. Being so rural, and small means teachers/staff know each and every kiddo from every grade! I want to create a place for our kids to have a moment of relaxation, and a place to let their minds wander outside of the classroom. I want them to have a place to go to unwind and relax. Whether that is playing with kinetic sand/water beads, or cuddling up in a cozy nook with low lighting. They are such hard workers in the classroom, but I would love to create a space so they can play/relax and not have any worries. I want students to be able to apply their senses in different areas. The nice thing about a sensory room is it enhances learning through play.
Do you ever wish you could be a kid again?
Sensory environments can be highly absorbing, providing a moment of comfort and calm for overactive and distressed individuals, and helping inactive individuals to feel more engaged, providing a clear focus.
My Project
The purpose of a Sensory/Zen Den is to help students engage in their senses, and not have to worry about home, school, sports, etc.
I think every school should have a Sensory/Zen Den.
There is no right way to use sand or water beads. It invites participation; it stretches the imagination; it provides a potentially soothing sensory experience; and it is an excellent avenue for children to learn physical, cognitive, and social skills. Really, who doesn't want to play in sand?
I think the other important factor is the lighting. You want the room to be inviting, yet calm. Sensory/Zen Dens are important because of the endless opportunities for sensory-based input, changes to alertness, and social interactions they can offer to a vast majority of students, regardless of the different needs of each person. I just want to say thank you for taking the time to read about my project!
