This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, the students in my elementary special education Autism classroom are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
This classroom of learners has students who are nonverbal and rely on many different outlets to communicate with others.
Each student requires specialized instruction based on their unique academic, communication, sensory, and functional skills.
I believe that all students can be successful despite the academic and communication challenges they face!
My Project
Students with Autism require access to unique calming sensory strategies. The challenges that students on the spectrum face can affect how they learn and communicate in the classroom. The students need different types of sensory tools to regulate their needs. Once they have the ability to calm their bodies and minds, we can have a productive learning environment.
The purpose of this project is to add sensory regulation items in my classroom such as seating, weighted items, and items that help them move around in the classroom.
I hope this project can help my students be more successful in class so they can meet their academic goals!
