Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever heard a child speak their first words or learn to like something that previously terrified them? I have! I teach a special needs transitional kindergarten through second-grade class. They are sweet and curious young learners. The students I serve have a variety of disabilities including orthopedic impairments, autism, and learning disabilities. Feeling comfortable at school and being able to develop sensory regulation will go a long way in helping my kids learn and most importantly enjoy the school day. Please help me in teaching and developing these necessary life skills.
My Project
Many of my students have autism and have difficulties with sensory processing and fine motor skills. These materials will give them the opportunity to come in contact with a variety of textures and activities in a controlled and fun way. I hope the sand, beads, and play dough will lead them to be able to handle the multitude of textures they will encounter when working on hands-on science and art activities this school year. Their fine motor skills will also be improved by utilizing items such as the pencil grips and play dough. The flexible seating items will allow them the opportunity to be in the right activity/comfort level to learn throughout the school day.
