Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are some of the best people I know. They show up to school every day excited to learn. Going to school is especially difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of our students had interrupted learning, in addition to many other obstacles in their short lives.

The zip code our school is located in has some of the worst COVID-19 rates in the country.

Many of my students are immigrants or children of immigrants and 98% of them qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Some students are homeless or in transient situations and many live in small apartments with large extended families. Many students' families have lost jobs due to the pandemic or are essential workers constantly exposing their households to the virus.

Despite these trying circumstances, the kids are amazing. They love to learn and are eager to be their best selves both in school and in life. Our educators support our students to be safe, respectful and responsible members of our school community.

My Project

Students are rewarded for demonstrating our school's expectations of being safe, respectful and responsible. Students are invited to choose a prize at our school's weekly student store. The prizes are tactile and sensory tools that will be available for students to use in class or to bring home as a reward for their hard work.

My students will be able to earn the prizes for their hard work.

The prizes will support students' social emotional learning, as they can use them to help regulate their emotions when they become escalated.
