Sensory Play

Help me give my students the opportunity to regulate their feelings and emotions through sensory play. Sensory play is important for preschool students and they often only get theses experiences at school.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income school district (56.6% free and reduced lunch), my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My classroom is an Early Childhood Special Education classroom so the majority of my students have a developmental delay in one or more of the following areas: social emotional, communication, adaptive behaviors, physical development, and cognitive development.

These students require differentiated instruction each and every day.

My students are constantly learning and developing in all areas, but need new ways to enhance their learning. They need a variety of materials to draw their attention and increase their focus to learning activities in the classroom.

My Project

Sensory play is important for preschool students. Many of my students only opportunity to play with play dough, sand, water, etc. is at school. I am often reminded of the importance of sensory play when I see how these students are missing the ability to regulate their own bodies. Sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways. It supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. And it is fun! Children work on all these skills while they play and have fun! These new toys and materials will be used by my three to five year old students who are struggling to regulate their bodies in order to learn. We will use them this year and for years to come.
