Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in Los Angeles, California just a couple miles away from USC (go Trojans!) We are Title 1 School with about 90% of our students coming from low-income families. Almost all of our students are minority students and English Learners.
Room 3 has three very special students!
Room 3 is a K-2 classroom that currently has three 2nd grader boys and uses an alternative curriculum. The alternative curriculum is designed for students with moderate to severe disabilities who are not able to access the core general education curriculum without significant modifications. These special students are autistic; students with autism face challenges with social skills, nonverbal and verbal communication, and may exhibit challenging behaviors.
My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom.
Our students come from different backgrounds, cultures, and have different likes/dislikes and needs but in Room 3, we are all learners. Each day opens us to new experiences and adventures. Our days together are never the same. Their learning differences and remarkable characteristic traits are exactly what make them so special.
My Project
Providing students with autism sensory play benefits development and gives them an outlet they need throughout the school day. If you walked into our classroom, you might catch us hopping around like a bunny, standing on one leg like a flamingo, and spinning around like a tornado, or playing with Play-Doh making a customized pizza.
Sensory play encourages stimulating experiences where students can use their senses.
It acts as a catalyst for exploration, movement and improvement of motor skills, and of course a fun time. Play is a huge part of our day and these materials will fulfill my students' sensory needs. Instead of hopping around using our feet, we could be bouncing around the classroom!
