My Students
Sixteen 3-5 year old students with various disabilities from low income families come together daily to learn through movement and play as we build language and strengthen our skills through differentiation while meeting each and every child's needs. Our school is a Title I school where 100% of the children receive free breakfast and lunch.
When our sensory needs are met, learning can take place!
We like to look at our children like flowers, blooming at their own pace with the encouragement of developmentally appropriate teaching and learning strategies. In order to implement and benefit from these strategies, we require our sensory needs to be met. Each and every child will benefit from these sensory materials to bloom!
My Project
My budget is minimal yearly for a class of 16 children with various disabilities 3-5 years of age. The small budget I have is used for classroom materials such as crayons and construction paper. Without generous donors, we can not afford to give our students the sensory materials they need to achieve optimal learning.
Students with various disabilities have many needs, including sensory needs which can make learning in a traditional manner difficult.
Specific materials are needed to assist our students with their sensory needs. Our students get overwhelmed easily, have higher anxiety levels, and respond to touch, sound, and noises differently than typical children.
A crash pad and large bean bag chair will assist students who need pressure to calm themselves. Some of our students calm with swinging motions which gear them up for learning, thus the need for a safe swing inside the classroom. Various items for calming using visual stimuli and touch are needed for calming and for students who at times get frustrated and/or angry: Bubble tube, glow in the dark track with cars, set of sensory manipulatives, ocean wave projector with sounds, soothing pat mat, mermaid sequence pillow (which can also be used to stuff small weights in for deep pressure on lap), thera-putty (think stretchy playdoh), stress relief squeeze balls, spiky bracelets, pin art, and motion bubble tubes. Some students require movement as their sensory need and the following items will assist in these areas: crash pad, vibrating pillow and tube, peanut exercise balls (just their size), bouncy ball with legs that are safer than regular exercise balls, and straps for chairs to keep legs busy during learning activities. Finally, smells such as Lavender are calming. We would love to have a diffuser to introduce calming smells within our environment.
