Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an amazing school in the heart of Boston. My classroom is a preschool inclusion classroom serving children from ages three to five. All of my students receive free lunch, and most are English language learners. Because my school is so diverse, all of my students come from varying backgrounds and have a wide range of abilities. It is such a great privilege of mine to be able to watch these children grow and build an important foundation of knowledge.
Coming into school this school year, I want to ensure that each child in my class has the materials he or she needs to succeed and master our curriculum.
My Project
My Preschoolers need more sensory-rich materials. We will use these materials during our 1hr. center time block. We are asking for a set of sensory materials to explore using our light table. This will connect with our curriculum Unit on Shadows and Reflections as well as excite our senses! This kit includes translucent materials such as beads, rings and balls which creates unique textures that invite kids to explore light and color. The materials will illuminate with the use of our light table. We are also asking for clean sand to use in our sand table. We use the sand to build structures, sort letters and build fine motor strength.
Little learners LOVE sensory play, it allows them to build, imagine, create, investigate and most of all have fun!
I have noticed over the past month many students have been using water beads in our water table. They are engaged for long periods of time and return frequently. This interest has sparked my desire to provide more sensory materials to my students. We are also asking for a fun sensory game called the Mystery Box. Students will put their hand in the box and feel objects then describe their attributes matching them to cards from the game. This is a great way to meet learning standards and have fun.
