Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of thirteen special needs boys and girls ages five to nine (Kindergarten to 2nd grade). These students are under the primary diagnosis of Autism with a secondary of Speech Language Impairment. The class consist of 60% Hispanic and 40% other (African American, Asian, Caucasian, etc). Of the 60%, one-third of the parents are limited and do not speak English at home. The average household is below poverty level and unable to contribute to the extra needs of the classroom.
Many of the students have sensory challenges such as loud noises (crowds), taste, and touch.
The classroom needs to be designed around these challenges so the children can focus on learning not their challenges.
My Project
My students face many challenges in their life. They have academic, behavioral, speech and sensory difficulties. The items requested in this project deal with all of these challenges. My classroom needs to be able to provide for all of these situations.
Sometimes my students feel anxious and need a few minutes break from learning.
A quiet place (tent) with a comforting friend (a furry friend) in the classroom would provide this break but still allow them to listen. Sometimes the noises are too much. Whether is in the classroom or in the lunchroom, noise buffers (headphones) would aid the buffering the noises and allow them to continue on with their day.
