Sensory Overload- Providing a Safe Space for Student Sensory Needs
My students need a room where they can go when they are feeling overwhelmed during their school day. We would love to provide swings and sensory items to our students.
The students in my classroom learn and access the school curriculum in a unique way. All of my students have different learning styles, different goals they focus on, and differing personalities that affect their day differently.
Our class has 3 students, all with moderate intellectual disabilities.
As the year goes on, we continue to learn more about each other, and how we learn best. In our room, many different behaviors come out, some more difficult than others. We are always looking for ways to beetter the lives of our students, and make their learning experience more meaningful.
My students all strive to be as independent as possible. The main goals we focus on include self-help, daily living skills, and functional skills that will one day assist them in the real world. They continuously work on personal behavior skills, and different techniques to assist them with positive interactions throughout the school setting.
My Project
The students served in our classroom have many needs, especially sensory needs. Each day, our kids face the day with many obstacles and needs that need to be met. We would like to provide a sensory room that will provide students the opportunity to take a break, let out some energy, or cool down.
The items we have requested will help us start a program that grants students the opportunity to face their obstacles in whatever way works best for them.
Our students with autism often become over stimulated, and this room will offer them the opportunity to calm down. This room will also give our students with high energy the chance to explore and have fun in a new setting.
We have requested swings for our sensory rooms. These swings are known to comfort students with special needs. We have also requested a body sock and a pea pod to offer options to our kids with sensory needs. These items can be used to help a student let out energy, and calm themselves down independently. If we create this classroom, our students will have access to something they have never had before.
