Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

You could be the one to make the difference in the life of a child with Autism. I teach a Special Education class for students with Autism in a Title 1 school. The students are in grades 1-3 and are some of the sweetest and most energetic children you have ever met. Everyday is filled with new surprises for them and for us. After working with my students for a day, it will make you see how even the smallest step is worth celebrating.

Children with Autism have difficulties with sensory processing. They may have over sensitive hearing that makes the sound of a fluorescent light unbearable. They may have tactile problems that makes touching anything wet or messy painful to them. There are so many different types of sensory processing problems that my children have, it is impossible to list them all. In order to help them regulate their sensory systems, we need certain pieces of equipment that our district does not supply.

In order to help them manage their sensory overload, we use a lot of tactile stimulation. We use different toys and things they can hold and squeeze to stimulate their senses. We use sensory balls, weighted pillows, and fidget balls to help our students regulate themselves. Our small fidget balls look like toys which allow our students to blend in with their typical peers while also providing sensory input. The weighted pillow puts a little extra pressure on their legs so they are able to sit in their seat and learn. The scooter board will allow a student to get some gross motor stimulation and be able to function on a fine motor task. All of these tools are designed to enable our students to learn and be able to concentrate while also learning how they can manage their own sensory needs.

Your help could greatly affect the lives of all of the children in my program. You would be amazed at how supplying a child in sensory overload with something as simple as a weighted pillow can stop their tantrum and let them get control of themselves again. My kids are constantly in sensory overload, if you could help them, you would be changing their lives forever.
