Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all unique. Most of them are from Miami. My school has its fair share of out-of-state kids and immigrant families. These are Title I students who come from low-income households. I have a second grade ASD (autism spectrum) class so my kids are all different in what they can do. I have students who love to talk and share. I have students who are quiet but follow every direction with perfection and I have kids who are fascinated with technology. They all have wonderful qualities, but they also have a lot of difficulties staying engaged in the classroom.
Just to give you a taste of how great and fun my students are, I can tell you a story of my students when it comes to work and reward: One of my little girls speaks in a whisper and I have a hearing disability so I can't hear whispers.
One of my other students volunteers to be her voice and my ears. Can a heart be bigger than that? This is the same student who guides his fellow classmate on and off the bus every day!
My Project
In my everyday materials needs, my students need things they could use to take a break from the overwhelming amount of work I have to give them. It has been half a school year and my Play-Doh is dry and my hands-on sensory things are either broken or far too dirty to fix (I've tried!). With the sensory toys, my students can scratch that itch to move their hands around and squeeze or smash things that are meant to be squeezed/smashed; like the stress ball or Play-Doh. In addition, I also sprinkled in some of my daily needs like dry-erase markers because I’m always writing on a dry Warsaw board and binder rings to create social stories students can keep in their desks. All of these little things make a big impact on how their day goes. It helps make their day go by quicker and stress-free. By the way, stickers are a big deal in 2nd grade! They make great quick rewards and goal stamps for finished work.
